SONGS AND RHYTHMS FROM CENTRAL ASIA
A CONCERT OF INSTRUMENTAL, VOCAL, AND PIANO MUSIC: THE LONDON UYGHUR ENSEMBLE
TRADITIONAL MUSIC FROM CENTRAL ASIA AND PIANO MUSIC FROM GURDJIEFF/DE HARTMANN VOLUME 1 ‘SONGS AND RHYTHMS FROM CENTRAL ASIA’
The UK’s first locally-based group performing the music and dance of the Central Asian Uyghurs. Rahima Mahmut’s thrilling vocals are accompanied by an ensemble of longnecked
lutes, spike fiddle and frame drum. This easternmost example of the maqām
traditions of the Islamic world, with its limping rhythms and ecstatic poetry, is deeply imbued with the Sufi ethos.
